Description:
This gigantic project has been initiated by a UK born British turned Muslim lady. Ghufran Qureshi and her religiously dedicated and committed husband Muhammad Ahmed Qureshi, a noble son from the soil of Faisalabad. The start of the Sirat-ul-Jannah project is an interesting and inspiring episode and it cropped up after Mrs. Ghufran Qureshi, who hails from a properous British family, had a love marriage with Muhammad Ahmed in England in 1975 and embraced Islam after being inspired by its teachings. After marriage she started in depth study of the religion which brought a total change in her and as a staunch muslim she decided to live a prosperous life.During her job in an orphanage house in Britain, she had become fully accustomed with the difficulties and problems of orphans and their psycology. She resigned from her job in protest against non-provision of Halal food to muslim orphans in the orphanage. She came to Pakistan in 1990 and announced this gigantic project to take care of orphan boys and girls, to provide them Islamic education in a clean and religious atmosphere besides imparting modern knowledge. For the Sirat-ul-Jannah project, the couple purchased a 10 kanal land on the Murree Road and without having a consideration as to from where the huge Rs. 200 million amount will come, they started work with an initial Rs. 5 million which Mohammad Ahmed had brought from England. He also invested his share he got from sale of ancestral land in Faisalabad.Seeing the spirit of her son and British daugter-in-law, Ahmed's mother also gave her share for the project. From that point, there was no turning back and a number of philanthropists when they saw work on the project, started making contributions and within 18 months a 4 storied building was ready.Other Projects of Community Welfare...Along with orphanages at various cities, Sirat-ul-Jannah is also involved in a number of other projects of community welfare. Description: The Sargodhian Spirit Trust is a nonprofit organization formed by Sargodha Old Boy's Association (Alumni of the PAF Public School, Sargodha, Pakistan) with the objective of establishing educational centres of excellence in all provinces of Pakistan. It reflects the resolve of the Sargodhians to pay back for the quality education that they received at their alma mater by giving deserving brilliant Pakistani students from all corners of the country an opportunity to get a head start in life through SST Public School's exceptional education. SST offers free education to deserving students from under privileged sections of society. SST Public School Rashidabad in interior Sind is the first in a series of schools planned to be built in backward areas of Pakistan. The Trust depends on philanthropists for raising funds to support the scholarship students from all parts of Pakistan, AJ&K and Gilgit-Baltistan.

SST Vision: "Aim High" gives the Sargodhian a vision in which he aims at deeds that take him to high achievements for which he has been uniquely educated. As the Sargodhian goes through real life with achievement after achievement, he is more and more convinced that he owes a debt to the society and institution, which has made him "Aim High". Thus is born a spirit of thanks giving in which the Sargodhian wants to be the benevolent emissary of his own good fortune onto others who are seeking the opportunity of the unique education which will make them "Aim High" to fulfill their destiny. In this way takes shape the "SARGODHIAN SPIRIT".

This spirit envisages three main elements of benevolence:

    1. The effective education model of P.A.F. Public School Sargodha.
    2. The Sargodhian as a custodian of this bounteous education.
    3. The young minds of Pakistan in general and the progeny of Sargodhians in particular as recipients of this bounty.

This vision further translates element one into the creation of institutions small and large that recreate and replicate the effective education model of P.A.F. Public School Sargodha. Element two becomes the vehicle through whose effort the above translation is achieved. And finally element three, the reward of this vision, creates a younger more vibrant spirit that helps to propagate the Sargodhian Spirit.

Objectives of SST: There are three main objectives of the Sargodhian Spirit Trust.

    1. Starting modestly and progressing steadily, the creation of schools/training centres using principles based on creativity, liberation of thought, objective curricula and their delivery, modern tools and the imbibement of human values would be the beacons of light for the young minds of Pakistan who go through these institutions.
    2. To create and actively work to enhance the Sargodhian Spirit Trust Fund that has to be used to further the vision and mission of the Sargodhian Spirit Trust, through objective no.1.
    3. Since 1953, Sargodhians have played a key role in nation building. The wisdom that has been garnered as such and the experience that has been absorbed will be utilized through Seminars, Workshops and Colloquia to impart knowledge and vision to all that make use of the Sargodhian Spirit Trust.

EYEDAS Introduction:
During the past few decades, Pakistan has faced mounting challenges from within and outside.  Mostly owing to its geopolitical situation in a volatile region, Pakistan's rising vulnerability is exacerbated by poor governance, progressively weakened state institutions and a shrinking intelligentsia in the face of a rising tide of violent, internecine conflict.
From the economic perspective, Pakistan has performed well. However, from the socio-political perspective, even with annual per capita income doubling to USD 800 and a 160% rise in social sector-related expenditure, almost a third of the population lives below the national poverty line of USD 14 per month.  Differences in income per capita have widened across regions, as has the rich-poor gap, poverty varying considerably between rural and urban areas.  Exports are predominantly agro-based, with cotton and textiles making up the bulk.  The agriculture sector, which is characterized by small landholdings - 0.5 hectare for 57% farmers - accounts for 23% of the GDP and employs 60% of the labour force, faces higher operational costs, diminishing subsidies and shrinking earnings in the face of skewed land distribution, falling soil fertility, water degradation, and lack of crop diversity, technology, information and access to markets.
As a result of such mounting paradoxes, it is easy to see how Pakistani society has become more dis-empowered and dis-enchanted, and how susceptible it is to fragmentation and strife. Likewise, youth in other countries are likely to continue to perceive Pakistan and its young people with suspicion, which may not always be justified.
The resulting misunderstanding splits youth into extremes, where ignorance fuelled by mistrust leads to a sense of victimization and exploitation, and feeling wronged makes youth easy targets for messages of hate and violence.
Analysis by national and international experts reflects a broad agreement on the following causes of youth disaffection and hostile behaviour in Pakistan's context:
A. Barriers to information and outreach
B. Isolation and absence of voice
C. Limited world-view
D. Lack of language and communication skills
E. Unfamiliarity with technology for development
F. Psycho-Problems due to poverty and unemployment.

NGO Name: Pattan Development Organization

Fax: 051-2291547
Cell: 0301 5578952
Email: info@pattan.org
Website: www.pattan.org
Description:
Pattan is a registered not-for-profit organization and works with the socially, politically and economically marginalized communities in Pakistan, with a focus to perk up governance deficiencies in Pakistan and encourages a collective feat for policy and structural change through mobilization and institutional development, networking and advocacy, capacity building and awareness. awareness is strived towards through theatre and cultural events.

Pattan emerged in 1992 after the disastrous floods that hit several areas of Pakistan causing massive ravage. Pattan came into existence with a foundation to condense the susceptibility of the communities in the riverine areas to intermittent destructive flooding, and to enhance their capacity to sustain their livelihood in the riverine environment.

Backed by OXFAM and CONCERN International, Pattan was primarily engaged in the distribution of relief and rehabilitation goods – tents, food and seeds – to the worst-hit riverine communities in the Sargodha, Multan and Muzaffargarh areas, the southern districts of Punjab.  The lessons learnt during the relief efforts of 1992 enabled Pattan to realize that relief alone does not address the defenselessness of communities living in the riverine areas of Pakistan but that the political-social intricacies have to be also considered.

Pattan initiated its journey with a mandate to address the issue of disaster preparedness, management and mitigation. Pattan focuses on harnessing the unleashed social and political potential of the people in an effort to enable them to become a part of decision-making that affects their daily lives.

Pattan addresses various thematic areas covering Disaster Reduction, Democracy and Governance, Women Empowerment, Youth and Volunteerism, Election Analysis and Observation and, Arts and Culture.
