Description: Since 1990 Nai Zindagi has been working with disfranchised groups of people affected by the use of drugs and associated harms to help them move from margins of society to centre stage. Often people affected by poverty, social injustice, criminalization and stigma use drugs to cope with the harsh realties of life they are confronted with every day. Increasingly larger numbers of people now inject drugs and share syringes/needles resulting in sporadic epidemics of HIV/AIDS in different cities of the country. We believe in "reaching out" to the affected and often hidden communities and engaging them actively in developing strategies and programs that best meet their needs and are appropriate to their environment. We would encourage you to explore our web site to know more about the nature of our work and how you can help us reach out and support more people. Nai Zindagi has introduced accessible, appropriate and quality services for preventing the transmission of HIV/AIDS and reducing drug related harms for people living on the margins of society in Pakistan. Our strength lies in our ability to develop a close relationship with communities and inviting participation from personally affected people (people using drugs and their families). Positive leadership, reaching out, non judgmental care and support, timely assistance and help, consistent and sustainable presence of holistic services, networking for support and providing access to socio-economic empowerment are key to Nai Zindagi’s success. Continuously learning from our failures and listening to our clients has been catalytic in the development of programs, services and interventions that evolve continuously and organically for effective outcome and results.

The first is through its growing project portfolio, designed to bring about change in the lives of individuals and communities. The second is through a series of events and collaborations with other organizations, intended to raise the profile of issues central to women and young people in Pakistan. NGO name: Talash Foundation
Address: http://talashfoundation.org
Description: Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. The World AIDS Day theme for 2010 is 'Universal Access and Human Rights'. World AIDS Day is important for reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done. According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.3 million people living with HIV, including 2.5 million children. During 2009 some 2.6 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 1.8 million people died from AIDS. The vast majority of people with HIV and AIDS live in lower- and middle-income countries. But HIV today is a threat to men, women and children on all continents around the world. World AIDS Day 2010: Rates of new HIV infections are slowing, but what now? Scores of cities and communities all over the world will dim the lights this December 1st to mark World AIDS Day as part of the Light for Rights campaign which focuses on human rights, HIV and AIDS. Significant progress has been made in advancing access to HIV prevention, treatment, support and care over the past ten years, but putting human rights approaches at the centre of the response is crucial to further progress. The 2010 Global Update on the AIDS Epidemic by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) shows that in 2009 the pace of new infections had declined by almost 20% compared to 1999, but still outpaces treatment success by two to one. There are still major gaps in the implementation of human rights commitments at national and regional levels according to the report. For many people living with HIV - and the people most affected by it - human rights can help to guarantee access to health services, work, education and community participation.

While the general aims and objectives of the Foundation are broad, the main focus of the Foundation is to serve Pakistan through service to Petaro and Petarians. It is a non-profit and non-political organization. Petarian Foundation is now a recognized body by the Pakistan Council for Philanthropy, and is thus a tax-exempt organization. Contributions given to Petarian Foundation can be claimed as deductions in income taxes. The Foundation was born out of a desire by a number of Petarians to recognize the great contribution of our nation and of the college in our lives, and to "contribute back" to Pakistan and Cadet College Petaro from the bounties we have reaped over the years. Initially, it was thought that the ideal solution should be to start the concept under the aegis of the Petarian Association. However, after deliberations by the Managing Committee of the Petarian Association and a resolution of the AGM held in 2000, a sub-committee headed by Commodore Mirza Ashfaque Beg was formed, which ruled that the Foundation should be created independent of the Association. A letter to this effect was issued by the Association on 9th October 2000.

Description: Primarily Azad was a group of students, teachers and alumni of Karachi University known as Azad Group. The group discussions centered on social problems, education and class disparity. The group also formed a theatre to highlight these issues. Class divisions and poverty were the most talked about issues as these created dissentions among different strata of society that stemmed out from the very core, i.e., education. The sector most affected were the children confused as why they were discriminated against due to their social, economic or ethnic backgrounds. Thus in 1998, the executive body of Azad decided to get their group registered and converted it into a foundation. Foundation initially chose to work for child development but during the course of their investigations found out that there were thousands of children stranded in the streets who ran away due to poverty and lack of resources. These children were in dire straits due to the misfortune befallen on them and had no hope to survive their teens. This phenomenon prompted Azad Foundation to specifically address the problem of street children in Pakistan. Azad initiated its work in 2001 accordingly. In June 2001 a base line survey study titled Street Children in Karachi was conducted in order to address the problems and to motivate Govt. and service providers for the protection and rehabilitation of street children. During the course of 2001 - 2002 Azad ran a managed campaign of advocacy and awareness which comprised of exhibition, Base Line study in Lahore , documentary, walk etc. To incorporate the issue into National Plan of Action, Azad lobbied in 2003 which further in 2005 became a part of National Plan. With the collaboration of UNODCP and ANF a study was conducted in four major cities of Pakistan in 2004. Study aimed to assess the trend of Volatile Substance Abuse among street children. Targeted cities were Karachi , Lahore , Peshawar and Quetta . The year 2004 marked a significant success when Azad, with the support of local corporate sector, established its first Drop in Center for the protection and rehabilitation of street children. The center was initiated in Saddar Town , Karachi providing a variety of services under same roof to rehabilitate and reintegrate street children. A consultation with UNICEF, Social Welfare Sindh and Govt. Stakeholder was held in February 2005. Consultation aimed to utilize available resources of different department of Sindh Govt. for the protection and rehabilitation of street children. It also targeted to establish a management system among departments and policy making. Throughout the process Azad Foundation and UNICEF ensured to provide technical and professional skills whereas UNICEF promised to provide technical and financial assistance. Policy revolved around establishing 10 Drop-in centers in Sindh and Azad was assigned the responsibility for the development of Standard Operating Procedures, training and implementation. Later Azad established two Drop-in Centers in Saddar and Jamshaid Town , Karachi respectively and are still in operations. Azad Foundation also operated a Drop-in Center at Khayaban-e-Sirsyed in Rawalpindi in 2005 with the collaboration of World Vision. A Rehabilitation Center Dehleez was initiated in 2006 with the collaboration of Group Development France, European Union and City District Govt. Karachi. Center offers a variety of services, skill development program, Job placement and reunification with family. To remove drugs effects a Drug Detoxification program was initiated with UNODC. Project aimed to rehabilitate children and provision of earning resources. Throughout its conceptualization Azad played a role of Policy Maker to improve Govt. policies, to influence public opinion in favor of implementing existing laws as Sindh Child Act, Juvenile Justice Ordinance and to organize civil society in assigning its role in policy making. During the course of ten years Azad conducted a number of symposium, seminars, workshops and have a variety of international level publication on its credit which helped pave a way for the intervention of rehabilitation of street children at international level. Azad also shared its experiences with international organizations and utilized the learned experiences. With out a doubt, Azad Foundation is a leading organization in Pakistan for street children and also providing resource material with technical assistance to other organizations.
